‘Jay-Z retired; he’s back,’ Eddie Kaye Thomas tells MTV News when asked about ‘American Wedding’ being billed as the last ‘Pie’ flick. By Ryan J. Downey

“American Wedding” was billed as “the thrilling climax” of the “American Pie” franchise back in 2003. But as every fan knows, a handful of “American Pie Presents” direct-to-DVD movies followed, and this weekend, the original cast returns to theaters in the appropriately titled “American Reunion.” So what gives?
When MTV News posed this question, Eddie Kaye Thomas (better known to fans of the beloved comedy franchise as Finch) was quick with a killer response. “Jay-Z retired; he’s back. Why don’t you ask him that question?” he said with a wide smile, to much laughter from co-star Seann William Scott.
In fairness to the entire cast, “Friday the 13th Part IV” was billed as “The Final Chapter” and there have been eight more movies since, including the remake of the original and “Freddy vs. Jason.” Speaking of Freddy, “The Final Nightmare” was roughly three movies ago as well. There’s nothing new about “final” entries in popular franchises turning out to be anything but, which is great news for the countless people who have loved the “American Pie” series since the first film debuted in 1999.
Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Thomas and Scott (as the notorious Stifler) are all back for “American Reunion,” which tackles the challenges of adulthood with the same balance of raunchy humor and warmhearted sentiment as previous installments. Biggs and Scott have co-executive-producer credit on the film in addition to their co-starring roles, which became a subject of comedy in and of itself when MTV News caught up with the cast in Los Angeles.
“He’s my bitch,” Scott joked of Thomas, when the “executive producer” topic was introduced.
“I got [Scott and Biggs] their sparkling waters and brought them their breakfast every morning,” Thomas deadpanned.
“American Reunion” was written and directed by the “Harold & Kumar” team of Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who were big fans of the spirit laid down by original writer Adam Herz and “American Pie” director Paul Weitz. Of course, the “Reunion” in the title was as much one for the characters as it was for the people who play them. The movie shot on location in Atlanta, unlike the previous installments which were all shot in Los Angeles. “All of us get along really well,” said Tara Reid, who returned as Vicky. “You put everyone back together again, in the same room, and the energy and the magic all comes back.”
Thomas Ian Nicholas (Kevin in the series) is also a musician, and that camaraderie and chemistry on location led to his participation in the film’s soundtrack. Nicholas has released two albums and contributed an original song, “My Generation,” to the soundtrack for “American Reunion.” “We hung out so much that — and I’ve never done this before — I ended up playing the wrap party, which is how Jon and Hayden really saw the music side of me and ended up putting one of my songs on the soundtrack. I think that all kind of happened because we had so much fun on the set.”
Part of that fun involved a number of comedic stunts, including a big fight scene that breaks out at a party.
“I have a funny story about that actually,” Thomas said. “When we were shooting the fight scene, it had just been written that my sort of fight portion was really easy, so for whatever reason, the stunt coordinator didn’t hire me a stunt double. So there was a moment where all the cast — Jason, Seann, Eddie, Chris — were sitting with the directors behind the monitors and all the stunt guys are in and me. So then they look and they’re like, ‘Does Thomas realize that we’re not there?’ So I was there fighting with the stunt guys because, you know, they didn’t have a stunt guy for me.”
Luckily, of course, he wasn’t hurt. “At least not that I reported,” he said with a grin. “I’ve done stunts before. We came up with this cool flip thing that I did to the stunt guy and then he kind of gave me some pointers on how to get kick in the gut and land flat on my face without breaking my neck.”

Two new Kanye West songs in just two days — now that’s what we call a G.O.O.D. week.
A day after dropping “Theraflu,” the Louis Vuitton Don dropped a second single, this time with his G.O.O.D. Music cohorts on Thursday night.
“Mercy” not only features rhymes from Yeezy, but Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz as well. The track, which premiered on Chicago’s WGCI, was released on iTunes at midnight in conjunction with the religious holiday Good Friday.
Big Sean and Pusha T set things off, while Yeezy and 2 Chainz bring up the rear lyrically. For 2 Chainz, who recently signed to Def Jam Records, being featured on such a high-profile track has further validated his success of late. “I’m excited about it,” 2 Chainz said on Thursday during a Def Jam-orchestrated press conference call.
Though he isn’t signed to West, 2 Chainz said he’s done so much work with Yeezy that he forgot what his “Mercy” verse sounded like. “I’ve done a lot of work with ‘Ye for, like, a year now, and it was one of those songs where I called him and I told him, ‘Man, play my verse over the phone because I don’t remember,’ ” he said. “That’s a good look to add to the résumé, for real.”
Sonically, “Mercy” blends Southern rap elements with dancehall vibes. It’s unlike anything on radio currently, and that’s what excites Hit-Boy, the G.O.O.D. Music producer who whipped up the tracks for “Theraflu” and the Throne’s “N—as in Paris.”
“It’s fresh, it’s new, it’s something you haven’t heard before. It’s elements of trap, but it’s just some fresh, new-sounding stuff. I’m excited about it. I wish I did it, but I didn’t,” he told MTV News hours before the song was released.
The chief producer on the record is new Kanye protégé Lifted, but in an interview with Las Vegas DJ Bootleg Kev, Lifted revealed that Kanye also co-produced.
“Mercy” starts with a vocal sampling from the late Fuzzy Jones, whose voice has hyped up many dancehall classics. The island-laced intro gives way to an eerie-sounding bass track, sparse drums, hair-raising piano keys and a dramatic “Scarface” film sample.
Lyrically, “Mercy” is a verbal free-for-all. Big Sean picks up where his “Dance (A$$)” single left off with strip-club-inspired bars. Pusha laments about his exotic car collection, while Kayne baits lesser rappers, flashing his riches and model girlfriends. With no real concept in place, 2 Chainz closes things out with a free associative verse where spits about his black diamond chain and Louis Vuitton backpack and expensive strains of marijuana. It’s all pretty damn good!

Is Tim Burton’s vampire flick darker than the campy trailer had us believe? By John Mitchell

So we’ve been talking a lot about that gonzo first trailer for “Dark Shadows.” It’s got its defenders and its detractors and that’s all pretty well documented , so we’re not going to spill any more ink on it. But now Warner Bros. has muddied the waters a bit by releasing Danny Elfman’s full score for the film — and it’s definitely not the score to a slapstick comedy.
First things first, the trailer unquestionably makes “Dark Shadows” seem like a farce. We’ve argued that’s not necessarily a bad thing — sometimes a radical overhaul is what it takes to reinvent something old for modern audiences (see: “Charlie’s Angels,” “Mission Impossible”) — but the tone set in the trailer is a complete departure from what everyone expected, while Elfman’s score, which can be heard in its entirety on WB’s Watertower Music , seems perfect for the film that fans of the TV show thought they were getting. Strange, right?
Elfan’s score is rich, deep and dark. It is heavy on strings, ambient sounds and atmosphere. The drama factor is high and there’s little evidence of slapstick. Tracks like “Killing Dr. Hoffman,” “Deadly Handshake” and “Barnabas Collins Comes Home” have an almost menacing and methodic feel, and “Dumping the Body” and “Widow’s Hill” are rife with shadowy action.
The music for the film is kind of amazing, actually. (Should Danny Elfman begin readying for his fifth Oscar nomination?) But what is most exceptional about it is how little it fits the film Burton had us expecting. There’s been some indication from sources close to the film that the comedic elements were dialed up for the trailer. After its initial arrival and ensuing fan backlash, co-star Chloë Moretz’s brother, Trevor Duke-Moretz, tweeted , “Fear not ppl, there is a lot of dark and creepy in #darkshadows, WB had to make a trailer that appealed widely, the film is brilliant.”
Talking about the film late last year, Helena Bonham Carter told MTV News , “I love ‘Dark Shadows.’ It’s very original. It’s uncategorizable. It’s a soap opera but it’s very, very subtle. … It’s a ghost story, it’s an unhappy vampire story, it’s a mixture of so many things and a real ensemble piece. And, um, hopefully it will be funny.”
Those don’t sound like the words of someone who just got done filming a flat-out gonzo comedic reinterpretation of a cult soap opera. In the past, Tim Burton has been a master of mixing the wonderfully weird with the dark and sentimental, and it’s difficult to convey a film’s complexity in a two-minute advertisement. Is it possible he’s really hiding a much more layered, horror-lite drama that includes moments of high comedy (almost all seemingly playing off Barnabas’ trouble getting his footing in the modern world) behind a slapstick trailer, hoping to reach as wide an audience as possible?
A few scenes in the trailer have always felt a bit out of place if the film really is an all-out comedy. The bleakness of Barnabas’ transition into a vampire at the bottom of Widow’s Peak is one. The “fight on, Barnabas” scene between Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer is another. Perhaps rather than try to do something serious with the show’s inherent camp, Burton and company decided to poke fun at it and move on? Maybe whatever consulting firm had its hands in cutting the trailer thought the one-liners would pull in more paying customers?
Who knows? But Elfman’s dark and amazing score adds another layer to the mystery.
With just over one month left until our favorite vampire that doesn’t sparkle in the sunshine hits theaters, do you think we’re in for a very different film than the one we’re expecting? Drake certainly isn’t holding back in releasing his new music videos! Minutes before the MTV premiere of the highly anticipated, Rihanna-featuring video for “Take Care,” Drake debuted the Lil Wayne-assisted video for “HYFR” on his October’s Very Own blog.
The clip opens with footage of a very young Aubrey “Drake” Graham at a friend or relative’s Bar Mitzvah years ago. Little Drake says “mazel tov” to camera, and then we cut to the video’s introduction, which is printed in white lettering over a black background. “On October 24th 2011 Aubrey ‘Drake’ Graham chose to get re-Bar Mitzvah’d as a re-commitment to the Jewish religion.”
We see another few seconds from the archive footage, in which little Drake is busting some moves on the dance floor, looking totally comfortable performing to the camera, before we hear the opening of “HYFR” and cut to Drake dressed to the nines in his freshest bar mitzvah formalwear standing in front of a group of what appear to be his childhood friends — including longtime producer Noah “40″ Shebib.
The video takes place in three different settings: The first is the opening shot outside the temple, the Bar Mitzvah ceremony inside the temple and the reception after the ceremony. Over the course of the nearly four-minute clip, we watch Drizzy chillin’ with his homies all civilized-like, then we see him going through the motions of the Mitzvah, reciting scripture inside the temple with a rabbi, and then we watch everyone wildin’ out at the reception with drinks, dancing and talking to ladies. Decorations and cakes are smashed, and Weezy — who is first shown fully clothed, wearing a panda hat/mask — eventually strips down to just his pants. There are also playful assists/cameos made by Trey Songz, Birdman and DJ Khaled.
Where “Take Care” has a more voyeuristic, contemporary-art feel, “HYFR” is just one big party that we’re all invited to watch.

<P>There are several women's names currently being tossed around as potential judges for the upcoming season of "X Factor." Avril Lavigne, <a href="/news/articles/1679730/x-factor-new-judges-hosts.jhtml">Janet Jackson and Britney Spears</a> are the leading rumored contenders to replace <a href="/news/articles/1678191/paula-abdul-exits-x-factor.jhtml">Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul</a> for the show's completely revamped second season, which kicks off later this year. </P><P> </P><P>In a recent press call, Simon Cowell would not confirm who producers were talking to, but he did not deny that Jackson was on the table. </P><P> </P><P>"You can probably count on two girls," fellow judge L.A. Reid added. "That we can confirm." </P><P> </P><P>Cowell recently addressed the Britney buzz on Billy Bush's <a href="http://www.accesshollywood.com/billy-bush/simon-cowell-x-factor-would-be-a-walk-in-the-park-for-britney-spears_articletab_61327" target="_blank">radio show</a>, continuing to play coy about the chatter. "Well, I'm fascinated by her. The fact that she's still one of the most talked-about — not just pop stars, but people — in the world today means that you've got this star power. This girl's got resilience, and the fact that she's survived this and she's still hot, she's still having hit records and she's still controversial … there's a reason for that. </P><P> </P><P>"I would think that if she's managed to sustain a family, a career, which is tough, this is a walk in the park," he added, noting that he believes she would be a good judge. </P><P> </P><P>While Cowell seems to be dancing around the issue, British "X Factor" judge Louis Walsh may have let the cat out of the bag in an <a href="http://www.breatheheavy.com/2012/02/uk-x-factor-judge-confirms-talks-with-britney/?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed" target="_blank">interview</a> on U.K. talk show "Craig Doyle Live." Absolutely true and maybe Janet Jackson," he said. </P><P> </P><P>In the end, Cowell summed up the current spate of rumors on that conference call. "There's a load of speculation, some true, some not true. It's true to say that a lot more people have entered the frame this year. We were waiting to see who was going to contact us before we actually contacted people," he said last week. "We're in that place right now, which is a good place to be in. We will meet a number of people over the next few weeks, mainly to explain to them that this is a big commitment when you do a show like this because of the mentoring aspect."</p>

Ke$ha and Tokio are also up for Best peta2 ad along with Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness and Yelle. </P><P> </P><P>The Libby (as in "Liberation") Awards will be decided on January 17 by fan votes as well as peta2. It propelled him from tween-dream poster boy to legitimate pop star. </P><P> </P><P>Exactly 10 years later, there's another young singer who is looking to make the same leap. When <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> dropped <a href="/news/articles/1681772/justin-bieber-boyfriend-mike-posner.jhtml">"Boyfriend"</a> earlier this week, he laid down the gauntlet and declared his pop-star manhood. </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:753202/cp~vid%3D753202%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A753202" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P>His transition is one that Timberlake faced a decade ago as he looked to carve a new path for himself in a post-'NSYNC world. With grinding, ear-busting production from <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/neptunes_2_/artist.jhtml">the Neptunes</a> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/timbaland/artist.jhtml">Timbaland</a>, the onetime boy-bander created an album that sounded unlike anything his fans had heard before. Sure, he had teased it on 'NSYNC's last album, <i>Celebrity</i>, but this album was different — it was all Timberlake. It was sexy and definitely much edgier lyrically, with him singing about girls and sex in a more-mature way. </P><P> </P><P>At the time, he faced the incredibly difficult pop conundrum of having to grow up right before an audience. That's the challenge Bieber now faces. At 18, he can't stray too far from his <i>My World</i> days, but in order to grow as an artist and a person, he also can't make "Baby" over and over again. </P><P> </P><P>And, honestly, who would want him to? Edgy and sexy feel like the innate next step for the teen star, with Usher as his mentor — a dude who made a name for himself singing songs about the things he does in the bedroom and flaunting his abs all over town. Although, it's interesting to note that Bieber chose to follow in Timberlake's footsteps. A little history lesson: Timberlake once was in a bidding war to sign Bieber on as his protégé. Usher won, and the rest is history. </P><P> </P><P>"Boyfriend," Bieber's lead single off his <a href="/news/articles/1681863/justin-bieber-believe-album.jhtml"><i>Believe</i></a> album, set for release later this year, is straight from the Timberlake blueprint. With production from Mike Posner and Mason Levy, the song is the perfect blend of hip-hop, vintage Michael Jackson-flavored R&B and pop. It's not a far cry from JT's "Like I Love You" thematically: A young man meets a young woman and uses a song, full of bleeps and beats, to declare all the reasons they should be together. Consider all the young women across the world sold on every one of his swag-heavy arguments. </P><P> </P><P>It's easy to harp on Bieber for playing it very close to the Timberlake playbook. But, why shouldn't he? Timberlake seems more focused on movies than music; Bieber's filling the blue-eyed soul void left by Timberlake's absence on the charts. And with A-list assistance from Timbaland (yes, Timberlake's producer), Diplo and will.i.am, <i>Believe</i> just might make us all believe in the power of Bieber. </P><P> </P><P>With the single poised for a <a href="/news/articles/1681935/justin-bieber-boyfriend-believe-release.jhtml">huge debut</a> and radio embracing the teen in a bigger way than ever before, now might be the perfect time for Bieber to become everyone's musical boyfriend. So, grab your fondue pot, get your swaggie on, and blast the track. You know you want to.</p>
Who knew Charlie Sheen may not have been the biggest sleazeball on the set of Two and a Half Men?!?
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, co-creator Lee Aronsohn said his sitcom is nearing a deal to bring Ashton Kutcher back for a 10th season, adding that he isn’t a fan of many new comedic programs that feature women – such as Whitney and 2 Broke Girls – because they talk too much about their lady parts.
“Enough ladies. I get it. You have periods,” Aronsohn complains. “We’re approaching peak vagina on television, the point of labia saturation.”
Aronsohn – who later tried to back away from his comments, saying Two and a Half Men specializes in fart jokes and he has no right to judge – added that he makes no apologies for his show’s less-than-flattering depiction of women.
“Screw it,,, We’re centering the show on two very damaged men. What makes men damaged? Sorry, it’s women. I never got my heart broken by a man.”
